There’s definitely something comforting about warm apples smothered in buttery, crisp, golden crumbs topped with heaps of hot custard – like this Apple Oat Crumble. It takes me back to the days when I lived at home and my mum would make apple crumble- though it has to be said, she wasn’t really the best at making desserts!

There were always bits of tough, fibrous peel, a soggy crumb topping, limp apples that lacked oomp of which there were always too many, especially when compared to the barely-there-layer of crumble topping. As an adult, I knew I had to change this (sorry mum, hope you never read this!).

Questions about Apple Oat Crumble
How to make Apple Oat Crumble? To make Apple Oat Crumble, start by making the filling. For this you will need to heat rapeseed or coconut oil with coconut sugar until sugar as melted. Add the plant milk and continue to stir until creamy. Add the apples, vanilla and cinnamon and continue to cook until apples are tender, roughly 10 minutes on a simmer. For the crumble topping, using finger tips, combine rapeseed oil with coconut sugar and oat flour and whole oats to achieve a coarse breadcrumb-like texture. Add apples to a deep baking dish. Top with the crumble then bake for 35 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
Is apple crumble good for you? Apple crumble can be good for you depending on what goes into the crumble toppings and how much sugar is added to the apples. If the crumble topping is made using wholegrain flour or oats, it will be higher in fibre.
Apple Oat Crumble Substitutions
The apples can be replaced by other fruits such as pears, berries, peaches and plums.
Coconut oil can be replaced by rapeseed oil or other flavourless oil. Unlike coconut oil, rapeseed oil is not solid at room temperature. However, in this recipe, the baking process means this factor will not have an impact on the crumble’s texture.
