These vegan, gluten-free Cauliflower Tacos really are the bomb! Crispy with a special spice coating, ah man! Cauliflower really has become my favourite vegetable. Actually it was not really common for me to use cauliflower as a main ingredient in my recipes. These tacos really take cauliflower to another level.
I recently went to a hummus restaurant that served whole roasted cauliflower heads with big ass knives stabbed through the centre and dammit I wanted to copy them! Well although I didn’t stick a big axe through the middle of mine or keep it whole, I realised there was a whole lot more that could be done with this cruciferous vegetable to make it exciting. Quite the contrary to what I used to think of cauliflower back in the day (and by back in the day I mean literally like a couple of years ago!).
The tacos, I actually made using sweet potato and polenta and they were so surprisingly soft and fluffy. Sadly, I’ve not written up a recipe yet for these, but I promise I will at some point.
Questions about Cauliflower Tacos
How to make Cauliflower Tacos? To make Cauliflower Tacos, you will need to combine tapioca starch with garlic powder, onion powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, cumin, ground cloves, white pepper and salt. Brush cauliflower florets with flax eggs then coat in the spiced flour mix. Spray or brush with a little oil and roast in the oven for 35 minutes until golden brown. Add into tacos or tortilla wraps along with salad, pickles, guacamole and sour cream.
Can cauliflower cause bloating? Cauliflower is a member of the cruciferous vegetable family and like many of its brothers and sisters, it has a tendency to produce flatulence and bloating. This does not occur with everyone, but if you are particularly sensitive to a range of foods (not allergic) then there is a possibility. A carbohydrate known as raffinose is present in cauliflower and humans are not fortunate enough to exhibit the enzyme that breaks it down. This ends up in the intestine undigested, where bacteria break it down via fermention. This process produces gas which is what leads to bloating and flatulence.
Cauliflower Tacos Substitutions
If you prefer to have a more plain tasting taco, you can omit the spices and just add onion and garlic powder instead to the tapioca starch along with salt.
Flax egg can be replaced with chia seeds or other egg replacement in this recipe.
